Celebrating Caregivers

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the millions of caregivers across the U.S. who provide vital support to their loved ones. These compassionate individuals serve an often-unseen role, offering their time, energy, and unwavering love to care for family members facing chronic illnesses, disabilities, or other health challenges. Their commitment deserves not only our admiration but also our collective support and understanding.

Caregiving is a profound act of love and resilience. It goes far beyond physical care, often requiring emotional strength, patience, and a deep well of inner resolve. Caregivers help manage complex medical needs, provide daily assistance, and offer emotional support—all while balancing their own lives, careers, and families. This immense responsibility can take a toll, leading to stress, anxiety, and even burnout. Yet, despite the challenges, caregivers find moments of joy and connection, drawing strength from the progress and smiles of those they care for.

According to AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving , nearly one-in-five Americans is a caregiver, highlighting just how common and critical this role is. However, caregiving often remains a silent labor of love, with its immense contributions undervalued or overlooked. At Acadia, we are committed to changing that narrative by shining a light on the essential role caregivers play in our society.

Since joining Acadia as CEO, I have had the privilege of meeting remarkable individuals who care for loved ones with complex neurodevelopmental disorders such as Rett syndrome, or conditions like Parkinson’s disease-related psychosis. These caregivers manage everything from medication schedules and therapies to household responsibilities, often sacrificing their own well-being to ensure their loved ones thrive. Their stories of perseverance and strength are both humbling and inspiring.

The stories they share are moving, educational and important. There is power in sharing their experiences – through storytelling we connect with others, helping to build community, raise awareness and even offer hope or support to those who are struggling on their own, unaware that others may be facing the same challenges or wins.

As someone who has walked the path of caregiving for my parents, both living with Alzheimer’s disease, I deeply understand the rewards and challenges that come with this role. It is a journey that has shaped me not only as a professional but also as a mother, a wife, and a daughter. I have learned that caregiving is as much about finding strength in difficult moments as it is about cherishing victories, no matter how small.

If you are looking for a place to start sharing your stories or listening to the experiences of others – I encourage you to visit some of the caregiver stories that Acadia has curated. Our aim is to amplify the voices of caregivers and their loved ones by creating a space where their experiences and resilience can inspire and inform others facing similar challenges:

At Acadia, we are committed to supporting caregivers in every way possible—by listening to their stories, advocating for their needs, and developing treatments that help improve the lives of those they care for. This month, and every month, we stand with caregivers, honoring their resilience and the profound impact they have on their families and communities.

Let us all take a moment to recognize the caregivers in our lives, offering them the support and gratitude they so greatly deserve. Together, we can create a world where caregivers feel seen, valued, and empowered to continue their incredible work.
